What each one does

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that skin converts to retinoic acid, which acts on receptors in living skin cells and speeds the renewal of the epidermis. The early cost is a temporarily leakier surface layer: more water escapes than usual, and skin reads as tight, rough or flaky for the first few weeks.

Hyaluronic acid does nothing to those cells. It is a humectant — a large sugar polymer that binds water and holds it in the outermost layers, plumping the surface and softening the look of fine lines while it stays hydrated. Molecular weight varies between products; lower weights travel a little further, higher weights film over the top. Neither is an active in the retinol sense.

Why the hydration helps, and where it stops

The pairing is uncontroversial. Hyaluronic acid is chemically inert towards retinol, needs no particular pH and does not degrade or neutralise it, so there is nothing to schedule around. What it offers is symptomatic relief — it puts water back where retinol is losing it, which is why skin usually feels less tight within minutes.

That relief is real but shallow. Hyaluronic acid adds water; it does not replace the barrier lipids retinol depletes, and left uncovered in dry air a humectant film can leave skin feeling tighter as it dries. Sealing it with a moisturiser is what turns the hydration into lasting comfort. It also has no effect on the turnover causing the peeling, so expect a more comfortable adjustment period rather than no adjustment at all.

How to run it in a routine

Both orders are defensible. Hyaluronic acid first, onto slightly damp skin, gives it water to bind and lays a hydrated layer under the retinol; hyaluronic acid after retinol adds comfort on top without sitting between the retinol and the skin. For reactive skin the second arrangement is the gentler of the two.

Do not leave a humectant to dry uncovered — follow within a minute or two with a moisturiser. Hyaluronic acid can be used morning and night whether or not it is a retinol night, and it is sensible to keep it constant while you vary retinol frequency. If skin is still uncomfortable, dropping retinol to two nights a week does more than adding another hydrating product.
