What each one does

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that the skin converts into retinoic acid. It speeds the turnover of surface cells and, over months, supports collagen production — the reason it is used for fine lines, texture and uneven pigment. That faster turnover leaves a newer surface layer with less accumulated tolerance to sunlight.

Sunscreen does the opposite job. Its filters absorb or scatter ultraviolet radiation before it reaches living cells — UVB, which causes burning and direct DNA damage, and UVA, which penetrates deeper and drives the collagen breakdown and pigment change usually described as photoageing. Broad-spectrum means both are covered.

Why sunscreen is the other half

Retinoids increase photosensitivity: skin tends to burn at lower exposures, most noticeably in the first weeks of use. Retinol is also photolabile, breaking down on exposure to light and air, which is why it is sold in opaque airless packaging and used at night.
