What each one does

Vitamin C, most often supplied as L-ascorbic acid, is an antioxidant. It donates electrons to neutralise free radicals generated by UV and pollution, acts as a cofactor in collagen synthesis, and interferes with tyrosinase, the enzyme that drives pigment production. That last effect is why it is used for uneven tone, though it works gradually over months rather than weeks. L-ascorbic acid is formulated at a low pH — commonly around 3.5 or below — because that is where it stays reasonably stable and where the uncharged form penetrates skin. Gentler derivatives such as sodium ascorbyl phosphate or ethylated ascorbic acid sit at higher, less acidic pH values.

Exfoliating acids work on the top of the skin rather than inside its chemistry. AHAs — glycolic, lactic, mandelic — are water-soluble and loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface, so they shed more evenly. BHA, in practice salicylic acid, is oil-soluble and travels into sebum-filled follicles, which is why it suits congestion and blackheads. Leave-on exfoliants are generally formulated somewhere between pH 3 and 4, since that is the range in which the free acid is available to do its work. The visible result is smoother texture, brighter tone and fewer blocked pores.

Does the acidity actually cause a problem?

The familiar warning is that an acid will shift the pH of a vitamin C serum and cancel it out. That argument does not survive contact with the numbers. Both products already sit in the same acidic window, so an AHA toner at pH 3.5 does not push an L-ascorbic acid serum out of its working range — if anything the two reinforce a low-pH environment. A high-pH product applied on top, such as an alkaline cleanser, would be more of a concern than another acid.

The genuine caution is cumulative irritation rather than chemistry. Exfoliants thin and loosen the outermost layer, which makes skin temporarily more permeable, so a vitamin C serum applied afterwards penetrates faster and stings more. High-strength L-ascorbic acid is itself mildly exfoliating, so the two overlap in effect as well as in acidity. AHAs are also known to increase sensitivity to UV, which matters when the pairing is being used for pigmentation in the first place. Formulation pH is rarely printed on the box, so for most people tolerance — not a calculation — is what settles whether the two can share a routine.

How to run it in a routine

The arrangement most people land on keeps the two apart: vitamin C in the morning, where its antioxidant role complements sunscreen, and an exfoliating acid in the evening two or three times a week. Nothing is compromised by this — vitamin C does not need an exfoliated surface, and acids do not need an antioxidant alongside them. If you would rather use both in one sitting, apply the acid first because it is usually the thinner, more fluid texture, give it five to twenty minutes to settle, then apply the vitamin C. Some people find the reverse more comfortable, putting vitamin C on intact skin before the acid, and that is a reasonable variation.

Introduce one active at a time. Establish whichever matters more to you for two to four weeks, then add the second at a low frequency — once or twice a week — and build only if skin stays calm. Brief tingling that fades within a minute is common; stinging that persists, redness that is still there the next morning, tightness or unexpected flaking is a signal to drop back to alternating days, reduce the acid to once weekly, or buffer by applying moisturiser first. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is not optional with this pair, both because AHAs increase UV sensitivity and because sun exposure undoes the pigment work either ingredient is doing.
