Lactic acid is a humectant too

The straightforward arrangement is lactic acid on clean dry skin, two or three nights a week, followed after a minute by hyaluronic acid on skin that is still slightly moist, then a moisturiser to seal both. Applying the acid itself to damp skin increases how much gets in and is a common cause of unexpected stinging.

Hyaluronic acid is tolerated well enough to use every morning and evening, acid nights or not, and it doubles as a buffer if lactic acid feels sharp — applied first, it softens the contact without cancelling the exfoliation. If skin flakes or tightens, reduce the acid nights rather than the hydration. Stinging or redness lasting beyond a few minutes suggests the strength is too high for you.
