What the label actually certifies

Broad spectrum is a pass or fail claim resting on a spectrophotometric measurement, not a clinical outcome. A film of product is spread on a roughened plate, transmittance is measured from 290 to 400 nm, and the critical wavelength is the point below which 90 per cent of the absorbance area lies. Pass is 370 nm or above.

Note what that does not establish. It certifies the shape of the curve, not its height, so a product with weak but evenly spread absorbance can pass while one with strong UVB absorbance and a sharp cut-off cannot. Europe adds a second condition tying UVA performance to the SPF.

Why one filter cannot do the whole job

Every organic filter has an absorbance peak and falls away either side of it, so no single molecule covers 290 to 400 nm evenly. Formulators combine them: short-wavelength absorbers for UVB, mid-range ones for UVA2, and a long-wavelength absorber such as avobenzone to reach UVA1.

Photostability is the second constraint. Avobenzone degrades under ultraviolet, losing absorbance precisely where it was included to work, which is why it is paired with stabilisers such as octocrylene or with filters that quench its excited state. A formula can therefore be broad spectrum fresh and less so after an hour outdoors.

The floor, not the ceiling

The common misreading is treating broad spectrum as a grade. It is a threshold, and two products carrying the same words can differ substantially in how much UVA1 they stop. Where only the critical wavelength test applies, no number on the pack lets a consumer rank two compliant products.

The tests also assume an application density most people do not reach, and neither addresses visible light. None of this makes the standard useless — it rules out the UVB-only products that once dominated. It answers whether a product qualifies, not how well it performs.
