What SPF and UVA ratings actually measure
SPF is a ratio, not a percentage: it compares how much UV it takes to redden protected skin against unprotected skin, under laboratory conditions and a generous fixed film of product. Because redness is driven mainly by UVB, SPF is essentially a UVB number. SPF 15 filters around 93 per cent of UVB, SPF 30 around 97 and SPF 50 around 98 — steps that look small but each roughly halve what gets through.
UVA is graded separately, because the SPF figure says nothing about long wavelengths. The Asian PA system runs from PA+ (roughly two to four times protection) to PA++++ (sixteen or more); in the EU the circled symbol means UVA protection is at least a third of the labelled SPF; in the US "broad spectrum" is pass/fail. If pigmentation is your concern, that mark matters as much as the SPF.
Why real-world protection is lower than the label
SPF testing uses 2 mg of product per square centimetre — a visibly thick layer that few people apply. Studies of habitual use repeatedly find a quarter to a half of that, and protection falls faster than proportionally, so a thin layer of SPF 50 can behave closer to SPF 10 to 20. This is the largest gap between label and reality.
Two finger-lengths — a strip along the index and middle fingers, roughly a third of a teaspoon — approximates the tested dose for face, neck and ears; about 30 to 35 ml covers an adult body. Ears, eyelids, the sides of the neck, the hairline, hands and feet are missed consistently, and a second thin layer beats one heavy one.
Photostability and the case for reapplying
A filter works by taking energy out of the incoming radiation, and some are gradually altered by the energy they absorb. Avobenzone, the most widely used long-UVA filter, degrades measurably in sunlight unless stabilised by other ingredients — which well-made modern formulas do. Mineral filters are inherently photostable. No consumer can judge this from a bottle, which is part of why the two-hour rule exists.
Photodegradation is not the main reason protection fades, though. Sweat, water, towel-drying and rubbing remove product faster than sunlight breaks it down, and "water resistant" means the SPF held up over 40 or 80 minutes of immersion in testing, not that it is waterproof. None of this replaces a doctor's assessment of a mole that is changing, itching or bleeding.

Is mineral or chemical sunscreen better?
Both protect effectively when used correctly; mineral suits sensitive skin and starts working immediately, while chemical filters are often lighter and more cosmetically elegant.
Do I need sunscreen indoors or on a cloudy day?
UVB drops sharply behind glass and under heavy cloud, but long UVA passes through both, so a bright room near a window still delivers a real dose. If you sit by a window or drive regularly, morning application is worth it; in a room with no daylight it makes little difference.
Does a higher SPF let me stay out longer?
Treating SPF as a time multiplier assumes a perfect film and constant UV intensity, neither of which holds outdoors. Read it as how much UV is filtered at any moment, not as extra hours, and reapply on the same schedule regardless of the number.
Will sunscreen stop me making enough vitamin D?
In everyday use it does not appear to, largely because application is thin and incidental exposure continues; studies of regular users have generally not found deficiency attributable to sunscreen. If you think your levels may be low, a blood test is more reliable than deliberate sun exposure.
How can I tell if my sunscreen has expired?
Check the expiry date or period-after-opening symbol, and treat heat as the bigger enemy — a bottle left in a hot car may underperform even within date. Separation, a change in smell, colour or texture, or a formula gone watery are reasons to replace it.
