How each type filters UV

Both categories do the same job by different routes. Mineral filters are inorganic particles that stay largely on the surface of the skin, where they scatter and absorb ultraviolet light before it reaches living cells. Chemical filters are carbon-based molecules that absorb UV photons and release the energy as a negligible amount of heat. The older description of mineral sunscreen as a pure "reflector" is a simplification: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide absorb a substantial share of the UV that hits them.

What matters more than the category is the filter combination. A single filter rarely covers the whole UV range on its own, which is why broad-spectrum products blend several. Avobenzone, for example, is a strong UVA absorber but needs stabilising partners; zinc oxide covers UVB and much of UVA in one ingredient but requires a high load to do so.

What actually determines the protection you get

SPF values on a label are measured at 2 mg per square centimetre of skin — roughly a third of a teaspoon for the face and neck. Most people apply between a quarter and a half of that, which lowers real-world protection considerably regardless of which filter type is inside. Reapplication matters just as much: film breaks down with sweat, water, towelling and rubbing.

In practice the deciding factor is wearability. A chemical formula you apply generously every morning outperforms a mineral one you use sparingly because of the cast, and the reverse is equally true for someone whose skin stings with organic filters.

How to choose between them

Choose mineral if your skin is reactive, if you are healing after a procedure, or if organic filters have stung your eyes in the past. Choose chemical if you want a light, invisible finish under makeup or you have found mineral textures too heavy. Hybrid formulas combine both and often solve the cast problem while keeping some of the tolerability of zinc.

In every case, look for the words broad spectrum, an SPF of 30 or higher for daily use, and a texture you will genuinely reapply.

Largely, yes. The particles remain on the surface film, which is why mineral formulas protect immediately and why an even layer matters so much — any gap in the film is a gap in the protection.

Is a higher SPF worth it if I am using mineral?

SPF 30 filters roughly 97% of UVB and SPF 50 around 98%. The extra margin is small on paper but useful in practice, because almost everyone under-applies. Higher SPF gives you more room for that error.

Can I mix mineral and chemical sunscreens in one routine?

Yes. Layering different products is not harmful, though there is no additive benefit — the protection you get is roughly that of the more generously applied layer, not the sum of the two.

Which type is better for the environment?

Some regions restrict specific organic filters such as oxybenzone and octinoxate over reef concerns. Where that matters to you, check the ingredient list rather than the mineral-versus-chemical label, since many modern chemical formulas no longer contain the restricted filters.
