What each label certifies
Sunburn is driven mainly by UVB, so the SPF test measures one thing: how much longer skin under a measured film takes to redden. A product can score highly on that test while transmitting a great deal of UVA, because UVA causes comparatively little immediate redness. Which to choose, and how to read the label
For nearly everyone the answer is broad-spectrum, and the choice costs little, since most modern formulations meet the standard as a matter of course. It matters most if your concern is ageing or pigmentation rather than burning: UVA reaches deeper into the dermis, passes through window glass and cloud with only modest attenuation, and is fairly steady across the day and the seasons, so exposure accumulates during hours you would not think of as sunny.

American packs print “broad spectrum” beside the SPF; European packs carry a circled UVA; Japanese and Korean packs use PA+ through PA++++ for increasing UVA protection.
