How each one works

Niacinamide is the amide form of vitamin B3. Inside skin cells it replenishes NAD+, the coenzyme behind repair and energy production. The effects are broad: more ceramide output, so the barrier holds water; less sebum over eight to twelve weeks; and quieter inflammatory signalling that reads as less redness.

Azelaic acid works on several fronts. It is mildly antibacterial, it normalises how the pore lining sheds so plugs form less readily, and it inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme behind melanin synthesis. That pigment action is selective, acting hardest on cells already overproducing, so marks fade without surrounding skin lightening.

Which to choose

The deciding question is whether skin needs supporting or treating. For shine, visible pores and a barrier that stings easily, niacinamide is the sensible first move — inexpensive, easy to slot in, rarely reactive. For active spots, a settled flush, or brown marks from old breakouts, azelaic acid does more of the work.

Deeper skin tones tend to mark more readily after inflammation, and azelaic acid addresses both the inflammation and its aftermath. Neither ingredient replaces assessment, though — persistent or scarring acne warrants a clinician rather than another shelf product. Azelaic acid at 15–20% exists as prescription gels, foams and creams in many countries, a route for a prescriber to judge.

Using them together, or switching

They combine without difficulty. The old claim that niacinamide neutralises acids came from laboratory work at high temperatures and does not describe what happens on skin. Apply the thinner formula first — usually the niacinamide serum — then azelaic acid over it. Some products contain both.

If you are switching rather than combining, introduce azelaic acid every second or third night for a fortnight while keeping niacinamide constant. Early tingling usually settles; burning, swelling or a spreading rash does not, and is a reason to stop. Allow twelve weeks before judging either.
