What each acid class does

AHAs are small water-soluble molecules — glycolic is the smallest, then lactic, then mandelic — that loosen the bonds holding dead cells at the surface so they shed more readily. How much they do depends on concentration, the pH of the formula and how small the molecule is, which is why glycolic tends to feel the most active of the group.

PHAs are the same family of hydroxy acids with extra hydroxyl groups attached, making the molecule larger. Gluconolactone and lactobionic acid are the ones you will see. The larger size slows entry into the skin, which is the main reason they sting less, and those same hydroxyl groups bind water, so a PHA behaves partly as a humectant as well as an exfoliant.

Why step down rather than double up

This is not a pairing of two acids attacking different problems. Both work at the surface, so adding a PHA to an AHA widens nothing — it moderates the dose. The PHA carries part of the exfoliating work at a lower irritation cost, and its water-binding effect partly offsets the dryness that AHAs alone can cause.

Gentler is not the same as inert. The cumulative exfoliation load still applies, and a generously dosed AHA plus PHA formula can exceed what sensitive skin will accept. Judge frequency by the combined strength rather than by each acid separately, and treat stinging, tightness or a redness that has not settled by morning as a signal to reduce, not to persist.

How to run the pair

The simplest route is a single formula containing both, where the pH and total acid content have already been balanced. With separate products, the usual arrangement is the PHA as the regular exfoliating step and the AHA once or twice a week. That is also the direction to move if an AHA alone has been uncomfortable — replace some AHA nights with PHA rather than giving up exfoliation altogether.

Introduce the second acid only after two or three settled weeks on the first, and keep the rest of that evening plain. If skin objects, drop the AHA nights and keep the PHA. Whether you can eventually increase depends on your own tolerance, which no general guidance can predict. Higher-strength versions of these acids are used in clinic peels, applied and timed by a practitioner, and are a separate matter from home use.

Does adding a PHA make an AHA less irritating?

Not directly. A PHA does not buffer or dilute an AHA that has already been applied. What it can do is let you use fewer AHA nights for the same overall routine, and its humectant effect can make the whole thing feel less drying.

Do PHAs still increase sun sensitivity?

Yes. Being gentler does not exempt an acid; exfoliating the outer layer leaves skin more reactive to ultraviolet light either way. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen applies to a PHA routine as much as to an AHA one.
