Why the acid and the copper complex should not share a layer
AHAs such as glycolic, lactic and mandelic acid loosen the bonds between surface cells, and they only do that while enough of the acid remains in its free, unneutralised form — which is why leave-on formulas sit at a pH of roughly 3 to 4. Copper peptides hold their copper ion through nitrogen donor atoms that are themselves basic. Put them in an acidic film and those sites take up protons, the grip on the metal weakens, and copper can leave the peptide.
Two things stop that from being alarming. The effect is measured in solution rather than on skin, so nobody knows how much of a peptide serum is actually lost when an acid was applied beforehand; and the clinical case for copper peptides is modest to begin with, so what is being protected is a plausible benefit rather than a proven one. Separating by time of day is normally sufficient. This is also specific to metal-bound peptides — ordinary signal peptides sit alongside acids without trouble.
How to arrange them across the week
The simplest split is an AHA in the evening and copper peptides the following morning, which guarantees the two never meet. Alternating nights works too: acid on two or three nights, peptide serum on the rest. If you want both in one evening, apply the acid first and leave 30 to 60 minutes, which is roughly how long skin takes to drift back towards its usual pH after a leave-on acid.
Acids do most of the irritating in this pairing, so build them slowly — one night a week, increasing only once that is comfortable. If skin becomes tight or flaky, cut the acid frequency rather than the peptide. Daily broad-spectrum SPF matters more than usual while exfoliating. Rinse-off acid cleansers and professionally neutralised peels leave far less acid behind, so the spacing question is much less pressing with those.
