What each one is doing

Their evidence base is thinner than vitamin C's — smaller studies, often manufacturer-run, usually on finished formulas rather than the peptide itself — so treat any firming effect as gradual and modest.
The copper peptide exception
Copper peptides are the one class usually kept apart from acidic vitamin C. Copper tripeptide-1 holds a copper ion, and ascorbic acid is a strong reducing agent, so the concern is that each destabilises the other. The reasoning comes from formulation chemistry rather than trials on skin, but the caution is widely observed and costs nothing to follow.
That caution does not extend to peptides in general. Palmitoyl tripeptide-1, palmitoyl pentapeptide-4, acetyl hexapeptide-8 and similar ingredients contain no metal and are stable enough in a mildly acidic serum for routine layering. A peptide with no copper in it needs no separation from vitamin C.
How to arrange them
The common arrangement is vitamin C on clean skin in the morning, then other serums, moisturiser and sunscreen, with the peptide product in either routine. If you use copper peptides, keep them to the evening and leave the morning to vitamin C — a split that removes the question entirely.
Introduce them one at a time. Vitamin C is the likelier of the two to sting, so start it two or three mornings a week and build up; if the routine turns uncomfortable, it is almost always the acidic serum to reduce first.
