What each one does

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid, and unlike the water-soluble alpha-hydroxy acids it is oil-soluble, so it can travel into a sebum-filled pore rather than acting only on the surface. Inside the follicle it loosens the compacted cells and oil that form a blockage, which is why it works best on blackheads, closed comedones and early congestion.

Azelaic acid works on a different part of the problem. Alternating nights suits skin that flushes easily and costs little in results. Keep the rest of the routine plain: a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser you tolerate, and daily sunscreen, since both actives can leave skin more reactive to UV.
