Why the whole season shifts your water balance

Winter is a system rather than a single insult. Cold outdoor air holds very little water in absolute terms, and heating warms that same air indoors without adding any, so indoor humidity falls closer to desert levels. Both steepen the gradient pulling water from the stratum corneum, while hot water and frequent washing strip the lipids that would slow it.

The result is higher transepidermal water loss and lower stratum corneum water content all season. Corneocytes shrink and lift — the flaking — and the enzymes that dissolve the bonds between them need water to work, so shedding turns scaly. A more permeable barrier stings with products that felt fine in July, and conditions already quietly present — eczema, psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, keratosis pilaris — flare for the same reason.

The changes that reliably work

Most of what helps is habit rather than product. Shorten showers and lower the temperature; apply an emollient to still-damp skin within minutes; swap a foaming cleanser for a cream one; run a humidifier to hold indoor humidity nearer 40 to 50 per cent; use a richer occlusive at night; and keep sunscreen in the morning.

Comfort usually improves within days of stopping the stripping, flaking over one to two weeks, cracked hands or heels considerably longer. Conditions that flare seasonally are managed rather than cured, and a richer moisturiser supports rather than replaces any plan a clinician has set. Frequency of application matters more than the label on the tub.

When dryness needs more than a moisturiser

Skin cracked deeply enough to bleed, or fingertips splitting into fissures, is worth a clinician's opinion rather than more cream. So is weeping, yellow crusting or spreading warmth, which can indicate infection in broken skin. Itch severe enough to disturb sleep, or a rash that keeps extending, merits an appointment.

Dryness not improving after three or four weeks of consistent emollient use signals something else. Widespread itchy skin appearing suddenly in an adult with no change in habits is worth investigating, since it occasionally accompanies systemic conditions. Any persistent or severe itchy rash on a child should be assessed by a clinician.
