Why windburn is not really a burn
Skin sits under a thin layer of air its own vapour has humidified, which slows further loss. Wind strips it away continuously, so transepidermal water loss climbs sharply. Cold compounds this: air below freezing holds a tiny fraction of the water room-temperature air does, so there is almost nothing in it to slow evaporation. The stratum corneum then dries faster than it can be replenished.
The redness that follows is mostly dehydration-driven irritation plus abrasion, not thermal injury. The useful correction: a real sunburn is often mixed in and misattributed — fresh snow reflects a large share of the UV falling on it straight back up, and UV intensity rises with altitude. Blaming the wind sends people to a heavier balm when they needed sunscreen.
What helps, and how quickly it settles
Protection beforehand does most of the work: an occlusive balm on cheeks, nose and lips, a buff over the lower face, and sunscreen on anything uncovered. Afterwards, a bland emollient on damp skin and a pause on exfoliating acids, scrubs and fragranced products until the stinging has gone.
Tightness and stinging usually ease within a day or two, and flaking clears over three to seven days. Balms sold for windburn work as barriers but do nothing about the UV half. Redness persisting between exposures, or repeated episodes leaving fine visible vessels, is worth raising with a clinician rather than treating harder.
Frostnip, frostbite and when to get help
There is a point where this stops being a skincare question. Numbness, patches that look waxy white, grey or yellowish, or skin that feels hard rather than merely cold indicates frostnip or frostbite and needs urgent medical care. Do not rub the area or apply direct heat, and do not rewarm it if it could freeze again.
Blisters after rewarming, skin that stays numb once you are warm, or pain that keeps building point to a deeper cold injury. Any suspected cold injury in a child should be assessed without delay. Fingers that reliably turn white then blue in the cold, and cold-triggered hives, warrant a medical opinion.
