How each one works
Free radical damage in skin runs partly through lipids. Ultraviolet light sets off a chain reaction in the fatty membranes of cells, where one damaged lipid oxidises the next. Vitamin E sits inside those membranes and stops the chain, taking the damage onto itself and becoming a relatively harmless tocopheryl radical in the process.
Vitamin C works in the watery compartments around and between cells, where it neutralises radicals that vitamin E cannot reach. It also regenerates vitamin E, handing an electron back to the spent tocopheryl radical so it can work again. Vitamin C has its own separate action on pigment and on collagen-stabilising enzymes, which vitamin E does not share.
Which to choose
If you are choosing only one, vitamin C is the more useful active for most people. It carries the evidence for brightening and for supporting collagen, and it does antioxidant work in its own right. Vitamin E on its own is a reasonable addition to a moisturiser but is not usually the reason a routine improves.
Vitamin E earns more of its place on dry, rough or lipid-depleted skin, and in oil-based products where a water-soluble antioxidant cannot dissolve. Very oily or acne-prone skin sometimes finds high-tocopherol oils heavy. Pure vitamin E oil is also a common trigger of contact dermatitis, so a rash that follows it is worth showing to a clinician rather than treating as ordinary sensitivity.
Using them together
The pairing is the reason so many serums list both. Because one works in water and the other in oil, together they cover both compartments, and the recycling relationship means each lasts longer than it would alone. Adding ferulic acid stabilises the mixture further and is the basis of the widely cited 15% C, 1% E, 0.5% ferulic formulation.
In practice there is little reason to layer them as separate products; one well-made serum is simpler and more stable. If you do use two, vitamin C goes on first as the lighter, water-based layer, with a vitamin E oil or cream over it. Both belong in the morning, under sunscreen, where the antioxidant work is most useful.
