How the types divide the work

The fibril-forming types — I, III and V — build the rope-like bundles that fill the dermis and take mechanical load. They are assembled together rather than separately: one fibril usually contains all three, with III and V governing how thick it becomes. Type VI joins no bundle, forming a beaded meshwork that ties fibrils, fibroblasts and gel together.

The rest work at the boundary with the epidermis. Type IV assembles into the flat networks of the basement membrane, type VII loops beneath it as anchoring fibrils that catch dermal bundles like staples, and type XVII sits in the membrane of basal keratinocytes, gripping from the epidermal side. Together they stop skin shearing into two layers.

The type I to type III ratio

In adult dermis the balance is approximately four parts type I to one part type III, though figures vary with method, body site and age, so it is best treated as a rough proportion rather than a constant. Foetal and infant skin carries proportionally far more type III, shifting towards type I dominance through childhood.

The ratio moves again during repair. Early granulation tissue is type III rich and is remodelled over months towards type I, laid in dense parallel bundles rather than the basket-weave of intact dermis — which is why a mature scar behaves differently from the skin around it. Foetal wounds keep more type III and can close with little scarring.

No. Type II is the dominant collagen of cartilage and of the vitreous of the eye, and is not a normal component of skin. Supplements marketed for joints often contain type II, a different tissue target from the dermis.

What happens when one collagen type is faulty?

Inherited faults produce specific disorders: defects in type VII underlie dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, in which skin blisters from minor friction, while defects in type I affect bone as well as skin. Antibodies against type XVII drive bullous pemphigoid. These belong with a clinician.

Which type is in marine or bovine collagen supplements?

Marine collagen is generally type I, and bovine sources typically supply a mix of types I and III. The distinction means little in practice, because the material is hydrolysed into short peptides in manufacture and digested further after that.
