What the numbers actually measure

SPF is a ratio, not a percentage. It compares how long protected skin takes to redden with how long bare skin takes, measured under a film of 2 mg per square centimetre — a thicker layer than most people apply. Expressed as filtered UVB that becomes roughly 97 and 98 percent. The transmitted figure is more telling: about 3 percent gets through under SPF 30 and about 2 percent under SPF 50.

The same arithmetic explains why the scale flattens. Most available UVB is removed by the first 15 or so points, and each step after that chases a shrinking remainder, which is why no number reaches 100 percent. It also explains why the figure is fragile: protection depends on the thickness of the film, so applying half as much reduces it disproportionately rather than by half.

Which number to choose

For most people an SPF 30 applied thickly and reapplied outperforms an SPF 50 applied thinly and forgotten by lunchtime. The useful question is which product you will use in the amount it was tested at — around a third of a teaspoon for face and neck — and which you will willingly put on again in the afternoon.

SPF 50 earns its place where the margin for error is thin: whole days outdoors, reflective water or snow, very fair or easily burned skin, melasma or other active pigmentation, and skin recovering from a procedure. Some medicines increase sensitivity to sunlight; if a leaflet mentions that, raise it with the prescriber or pharmacist rather than adjusting anything yourself. A changing mole or a lesion that will not heal warrants a clinician whichever number you use.

Does layering two SPF 30 products give me SPF 60?
