The Epidermis
The Epidermis — the outermost layer of the skin, forming the visible surface and the body's first line of defense against water loss, microbes, and environmental stress. It contains no blood vessels and is made up mostly of keratinocytes arranged in several sublayers. It continually renews itself as new cells move upward and are shed from the surface.

Fed entirely by diffusion
The epidermis contains no blood vessels. Every molecule of oxygen, glucose and amino acid it uses arrives by diffusion from capillary loops in the papillary dermis, passing cell to cell. Diffusion works only over short distances, which caps epidermal thickness at a fraction of a millimetre.
The boundary itself is a structure. The dermo-epidermal junction is a basement membrane of collagen IV and VII, laminins and anchoring fibrils, folded into interlocking ridges that increase contact area and resist shearing. It anchors the epidermis and filters what passes. With age the folds flatten, which is one reason older skin tears easily.
The four resident cell types
Keratinocytes are the overwhelming majority, commonly put at ninety to ninety-five per cent of epidermal cells. They divide at the base, differentiate on the way up, make keratin and the barrier lipids, and end as corneocytes. They also release signalling molecules and antimicrobial peptides, so they are not passive bricks.
Melanocytes sit in the basal row, each supplying pigment to a group of neighbours through its dendrites. Langerhans cells sample what arrives from outside and carry it to a lymph node, making the epidermis part of the immune system. Merkel cells, the rarest, register sustained light touch.
How far a topical actually gets
The stratum corneum is the rate-limiting step for almost everything applied to skin. Molecules cross mainly by weaving through the lipid matrix between corneocytes, a tortuous route favouring small, moderately lipophilic compounds. Penetration falls off sharply above a few hundred daltons, which is why hyaluronic acid at cosmetic size holds water at the surface.
Most cosmetic actives therefore work in the epidermis, and that is the point rather than a limitation: pigment, barrier lipids, corneocyte cohesion and surface hydration are all epidermal. Claiming that an ingredient reaches the dermis sets a much higher bar: crossing the corneum, the living epidermis and the basement membrane.

How thick is the epidermis?

Is the epidermis the same thing as the skin barrier?
Not quite. The barrier is a function, and most of it is performed by the stratum corneum together with the lipids made in the granular layer beneath. The term is often used more loosely still, to take in surface pH and the microbiome.
Do darker and lighter skin have different numbers of melanocytes?
Melanocyte density is broadly similar across skin tones at any given site. What differs is how much melanin each cell makes and how it is packaged: in more deeply pigmented skin the melanosomes are larger and more slowly broken down.
Can anything applied to the skin get past the epidermis?
Some things can, but fewer than marketing implies. Reaching the dermis means crossing the corneum, the living epidermis and the basement membrane at a useful concentration, which favours small, moderately oil-soluble molecules.
