How the gland actually works
A sebaceous gland is a cluster of lipid-filling cells budding off the side of a hair follicle; the two together are the pilosebaceous unit. New sebocytes divide at the outer rim, migrate inward and swell with lipid droplets until the nucleus breaks down and the whole cell disintegrates, becoming the secretion itself.
That is holocrine secretion — unusual in that the cell is the product rather than something that makes one. The journey takes roughly one to two weeks, so today's sebum was committed some time ago. It drains into the follicular canal, where resident bacteria split part of the triglyceride into free fatty acids and glycerol.
Why the mix matters as much as the amount
Two people with the same measured output can have quite different skin, because composition varies as well as volume. Sebum from acne-prone skin tends to be relatively lower in linoleic acid, and that dilution within the follicle has been linked with altered keratinisation of the follicular lining — the change that precedes a comedo.
Squalene behaves differently depending on conditions. Intact, it is a good emollient and a sacrificial antioxidant. Oxidised by UV or pollution, its peroxides are comedogenic and pro-inflammatory in laboratory work. Quantity therefore predicts shine better than it predicts breakouts, and acne itself belongs with a clinician.
What sets the daily output
Sebaceous glands are androgen-responsive, which is why output is high in newborns, nearly silent through childhood and climbs steeply from adrenarche onwards; that detail has its own entry. Output later declines with age, more abruptly in women after menopause. It varies by site too — dense on the forehead, nose, chest and upper back, absent on palms and soles.
A daily rhythm sits on top of that. Secretion is generally lowest in the early morning and highest around the middle of the day, and warm skin lets the existing film spread more readily, so the same face looks shinier by mid-afternoon and in summer. Diet, stress and cleansing are commonly blamed, but the evidence is thinner.

Do sebaceous glands exist everywhere on the body?
Almost everywhere, but not on the palms or soles. They are densest on the face, scalp, chest and upper back and sparse on the limbs. A few sites, including the eyelid margins and lips, have glands that open straight onto the surface.
Is a shiny face the same thing as having large pores?
They often appear together but are not the same. Pore visibility reflects follicle size, how much material fills the opening and how firm the surrounding skin is. High sebum output makes a filled follicle easier to see.
