How each one works

Salicylic acid dissolves in oil, so it travels with sebum into the pore rather than staying on the surface. There it weakens the bonds holding dead cells to the pore wall, letting the plug behind a blackhead loosen and clear. Related to aspirin, it also calms inflammation around a spot.

Glycolic acid is water-soluble and acts across the surface, breaking the bonds between dead cells in the outermost layer so they shed more evenly. At 76 daltons it is the smallest alpha-hydroxy acid, which explains both how readily it penetrates and why it stings more than lactic or mandelic acid.

Which to choose

Match the acid to the concern rather than the marketing. If skin is shiny by midday, prone to blackheads on the nose and chin, and congested along the jaw, salicylic acid addresses the cause. If it looks flat, feels rough, or carries the mottled tone of past sun exposure, glycolic acid is the better fit.

For most people the split is that simple, but two things complicate it. Dry skin using salicylic acid daily will often feel tight, and oily skin using glycolic acid tends to find the congestion unchanged. Acne that keeps returning or leaves scars warrants a clinician rather than a stronger acid.

Using them together, or switching

They can be used together, though rarely on the same night at full strength. Alternating — glycolic acid on two evenings, salicylic acid on two others — gives you both without a permanently compromised barrier. Products blending low concentrations of each are formulated to be tolerable.

When switching, stop the first acid before starting the second rather than tapering both at once, and reintroduce at two nights a week. Sunscreen matters more with glycolic acid, since surface exfoliation leaves skin measurably more sun-sensitive for around a week. Stinging that outlasts a few minutes means the strength is too high.
