What ultraviolet light does inside the skin
Sunlight acts at different depths. UVB is absorbed in the epidermis, where it damages DNA and drives burning and tanning. UVA reaches the dermis, passing through cloud and window glass, and generates reactive oxygen species that switch on matrix metalloproteinases — enzymes that cut collagen faster than it is replaced. The end point is solar elastosis: a dermis packed with tangled elastic material, and skin that looks coarse and furrowed.
How much of visible facial aging this accounts for shows in unilateral photoaging among professional drivers: after decades with one side at the window, that side is more deeply wrinkled, leathery and mottled than the sheltered side. Visible light and infrared add to the load, and visible light drives pigment in deeper skin tones.
What genuinely improves, and over what timescale
Prevention outperforms correction by a wide margin, and no topical closes that gap. The corollary is better news than it sounds: some photodamage is partly reversible, because once the UV load is removed the skin repairs on its own over months.
Retinoids have the strongest evidence for texture and fine lines, judged over three months to a year. Vitamin C, niacinamide and azelaic acid work on tone over two to three months. Solar elastosis and deep furrows do not respond to home topicals, and claims of undoing years of sun damage in weeks are ahead of the evidence.
When photodamage becomes a clinical question
Ask a clinician about any spot or patch that changes in size, shape or colour, that bleeds or crusts, or has not healed within a few weeks. Rough scaly patches that keep returning may be actinic keratoses, a clinician matter with its own entry. A new or changing mole should be shown promptly.
A skin check is also reasonable after repeated blistering sunburn, years of outdoor work, many moles, or medication that suppresses the immune system. Anything on a child's skin goes to a clinician.

What is the difference between photoaging and natural aging?

Why does my face look older than the skin under my clothes?
The two have had entirely different light exposure. Covered skin still ages chronologically, but it does not accumulate the collagen breakdown, mottling and coarse texture that follow decades of UV.
Do I need sunscreen on cloudy days or indoors by a window?
UVA passes through cloud and ordinary window glass, and it is the wavelength most involved in dermal collagen loss. Sitting by a window or driving regularly is real exposure, even though it never burns.
Does a tan protect my skin from further damage?
Only marginally. A tan is the visible sign that DNA damage has already happened and melanin has been mobilised in response; the cover it gives is roughly a very low SPF.
Can antioxidant supplements replace sunscreen?
No. Antioxidants work downstream, mopping up free radicals produced after light has already reached the skin. They sit alongside filters rather than replacing them.
