Humectant vs Occlusive — two categories of moisturizing ingredients that work in different ways, where humectants attract and bind water into the upper layers of skin and occlusives form a protective film on the surface that slows water from evaporating. How each one works

A humectant is a water-loving molecule that holds water near it — taken from the air when the air is damp, and from deeper skin when it is not. That bound water swells the flattened cells of the stratum corneum, which is why skin looks smoother within minutes. Nothing has been sealed, though, and the water can leave again.

An occlusive adds no water at all. It sits on top as a water-repellent film and slows transepidermal water loss, the steady evaporation up through the skin. Petrolatum is the reference case; silicones, butters and oils do the same more lightly. With less water escaping, the skin beneath tends to rehydrate on its own over the following hours.

Which one your skin needs

Tightness soon after cleansing, a dull cast, and fine crepey lines that fade when you press the skin usually mean a shortage of water, and a humectant is the useful step. This is common in oily and combination skin, which can be short of water while still producing plenty of oil.

Flaking, roughness and itch point to the barrier instead, and something occlusive matters more than another hydrating serum — likewise in cold, windy weather, on hands and lips, and on skin peeling from a strong active. Persistent flaking with redness or cracking is worth showing to a clinician rather than treating indefinitely from the shelf.

Layering them, and when one is enough

For most people the two work in sequence: humectant onto damp skin, then a cream or balm within a minute or two, while the surface is still moist. Order matters more than the number of products, and a single moisturiser containing both — which is how most are formulated — does the same job in one step.

One layer can be enough in the right conditions. In humid weather a humectant gel with nothing over it often feels better and still hydrates; in a dry winter, a plain occlusive over damp skin can carry the routine. The failure case is a humectant applied to dry skin in dry air with nothing on top.

Should I apply humectants or occlusives first?

Generally humectants go on first to attract water, followed by occlusives to seal that moisture in, especially on damp skin.

Is one better than the other?

Neither is inherently better; they serve different roles, and many effective moisturizers blend humectants and occlusives to both add and retain water.

Can I skip the occlusive step in a humid climate?

Often yes. Damp air gives a humectant water to draw on and slows evaporation, so a light gel may be enough. If skin still feels tight by mid-morning, adding an occlusive at night usually settles it.

Will an occlusive clog my pores?

Petrolatum and dimethicone are generally regarded as non-comedogenic, and occlusion by itself does not cause acne in most people. Richer plant oils and butters are more variable, and some people do congest under them.

How do emollients fit alongside these two?

Emollients such as squalane and fatty alcohols fill the gaps between surface skin cells, which smooths texture. Many are mildly occlusive as well, so the categories overlap, and most good moisturisers contain all three.

Does slugging count as using an occlusive?

Yes — slugging is a thick occlusive, usually petrolatum, applied as the final overnight step. It holds water in rather than feeding the skin anything, and suits dry or barrier-compromised skin more than oily skin.
