What a cleanser is actually doing
Cleansing works through surfactants — molecules with a water-loving end and an oil-loving end. In water they cluster into micelles that trap sebum, sunscreen and pollution in an oily core, so the whole parcel rinses away. Sulfates clean aggressively; amphoteric and non-ionic surfactants such as cocamidopropyl betaine and the glucosides are generally gentler.
No surfactant can tell the oil you want gone from the lipids holding your barrier together, so every wash takes a little of both. pH matters for the same reason. Skin generally sits between pH 4.5 and 5.5, an acidity that suits the enzymes of barrier repair; traditional soap is alkaline, commonly pH 9 to 10, and can leave the surface raised for hours.
Double cleansing, water temperature and technique
Double cleansing means an oil-based step followed by a water-based one, on the principle that like dissolves like: modern sunscreen filters, silicones and long-wear makeup come away far more readily into a balm than into a foam. It is a night-time tool: in the morning a single gentle cleanse, or plain water on dry skin, is usually enough.
Use lukewarm water, roughly body temperature. Hot water increases how much lipid comes away and leaves skin flushed; cold water is harmless but does not close pores, which have no muscle to close with. Twenty to sixty seconds of light fingertip massage is plenty — contact time matters more than pressure. Pat dry and apply the next step while skin is still damp.
How to recognise a cleanser that is too stripping
The clearest sign is how skin feels a few minutes after washing. Tightness, a squeaky texture, stinging when a serum goes on, fine flaking around the nose and mouth, or a dull, papery look all suggest the cleanser is removing more than it should. Skin that has turned reactive is often responding to the cleanse, not the actives being blamed.
The fix is usually simple: move to a lower-pH cream or gel, cleanse thoroughly once a day rather than twice, and keep the rest of the routine bland. Barrier recovery generally takes two to four weeks. If burning, persistent redness, cracking or a rash continues despite a gentle routine, that is worth showing to a doctor.
