Elastin

Elastin — a stretchy structural protein in the dermis that allows skin to snap back into place after being stretched or compressed. It works alongside collagen, with collagen providing strength and elastin providing recoil, and it is produced mainly early in life with very slow renewal thereafter.

Recoil, not strength

Elastin fibres are built from tropoelastin, a strongly water-repelling protein that fibroblasts secrete into the space around them. It is deposited onto a template of fibrillin microfibrils, then cross-linked by lysyl oxidase into an insoluble, rubber-like network. The stretch is physics: pulling exposes its water-repelling regions to water, and releasing lets them spring back.

That job is not collagen's. Collagen resists elongation and carries load, so a dermis with ample collagen and no working elastin would be strong but slack. Elastic fibres are arranged accordingly — fine and near-vertical below the epidermis, coarser and more horizontal deeper down — so recoil runs through the full thickness.

A protein you largely only get once

Production peaks in late foetal life and childhood and falls away sharply after adolescence. In adult skin the gene is largely quiet and the existing fibres are expected to last: estimates of elastin half-life run to several decades, with figures around seventy years commonly quoted. Very little elastin in an adult dermis was made in adulthood.

So elastin damage accumulates rather than resolves. Collagen is continually broken down and rebuilt, so conditions can shift its balance; damaged elastic fibres are simply not replaced efficiently. What adult skin makes after injury is irregular and poorly cross-linked, closer to a patch than a restoration.

What sun does to it

Ultraviolet exposure raises elastase activity and fragments existing fibres, while driving fibroblasts to produce abnormal elastic material that piles up in the upper dermis as thickened, tangled, non-functional masses. Pathologists call this solar elastosis, and it is among the most reliable microscopic markers of long-term sun exposure.

On the surface it reads as skin that has lost its snap: coarse creasing, a leathery or yellowed look on habitually exposed sites such as the back of the neck, and a pinched fold that stays tented for a moment. Because the change is effectively permanent, exposed and covered skin on one person often differ strikingly.

Can the skin make new elastin as an adult?

Adult skin produces very little new elastin, and damaged fibers are not efficiently replaced, which is why elasticity tends to decline over time. Protecting existing elastin from UV damage is generally emphasized over trying to rebuild it.

What damages elastin the most?

Chronic UV exposure is a leading cause of elastin damage, leading to abnormal fiber buildup known as solar elastosis. This contributes to sagging and loss of skin bounce.

Can a cream put elastin back into the dermis?

No. Elastin and tropoelastin are large molecules that cannot cross an intact stratum corneum, and elastic fibres must in any case be assembled and cross-linked in place on a fibrillin scaffold. Hydrolysed elastin in a formula behaves as a surface humectant, not a building block.

Why does pinched skin stay tented on older hands?

Pinching the back of the hand tests recoil, which depends on intact elastic fibres. On sun-exposed, older skin those fibres are fragmented and partly replaced by elastotic material, so the fold flattens slowly. Hydration affects the same test, which makes it unreliable on its own.

Do stretch marks involve elastin?

Yes. Biopsies of early stretch marks show elastic fibres broken and pulled apart alongside reorganised collagen, after rapid stretching in pregnancy, growth spurts or weight change. Mature marks retain thinner, less organised elastic fibres, which is part of why the texture change persists.

Is skin elastin the same protein as in arteries and lungs?

It is the same gene product, arranged differently in each tissue. Arteries use dense concentric sheets to buffer each heartbeat; lungs use elastic fibres for passive recoil. The very slow turnover applies there too, which is one reason elastic tissue ages poorly throughout the body.
