What "natural" means legally — which is very little

In the EU, the UK and the US, "natural" has no legal definition in cosmetics law. A product can carry the word on the strength of one botanical extract near the end of the ingredient list. ISO 16128 gives a method for calculating how much of an ingredient is of natural origin, but it is a standard about sourcing and says plainly that it is not a judgement on safety.

What is regulated is the product. Under EU and UK cosmetics law every product needs a safety assessment before sale, and the annexes list substances that are banned or restricted regardless of where they came from — several of them plant-derived. The meaningful work happens at the level of the specific substance and its concentration: an essential oil at 2 per cent and the same oil at 0.05 per cent are different propositions.

Why plant ingredients tend to carry more allergen risk, not less

A botanical extract is not one ingredient. It is a mixture of dozens to hundreds of molecules, many of which the plant produces precisely to deter the things that eat it. That chemistry is biologically active by design, and a share of it is sensitising. The fragrance allergens that must be declared on EU and UK labels are dominated by compounds that occur naturally — limonene, linalool, geraniol, eugenol.

In dermatology clinics, fragrance materials and botanical extracts are among the more common findings when patch testing identifies a cosmetic allergy; fragrance mix and Myroxylon pereirae (Peru balsam), both natural, are long-standing entries on standard test series. None of this makes plant ingredients unusable, and most people tolerate most of them without trouble. It does mean that people with eczema or a compromised barrier react more often than average.

Where the grain of truth lies — and how to judge instead

The instinct behind the myth is not foolish. It is a heuristic — prefer the long-used and familiar to the novel and industrial — and it has occasionally been vindicated when an ingredient was restricted after new evidence emerged. It also stands in for things people genuinely care about: shorter ingredient lists, less fragrance, more transparency about sourcing, lower environmental impact. Those are reasonable preferences.

The trouble is that origin is a poor proxy for any of them. More useful questions are which specific ingredient it is, roughly what concentration it sits at, what evidence exists for it, and how your skin has handled related things before. Position in the INCI list is a rough guide — anything after the preservative and fragrance block is generally under one per cent — and "fragrance-free" is a more informative label than "natural" if irritation is your concern. Reactions that are persistent or spreading are worth a clinician's assessment rather than more label-reading.

Not inherently. Some natural ingredients are excellent and some are irritating; what matters is the specific ingredient, its concentration and how your skin tolerates it.

Is synthetic skincare bad?

No — many of the safest, most researched and most effective ingredients are synthetic or lab-purified. Origin alone tells you little about safety or performance.

Is "clean beauty" a regulated term?

No. It has no legal definition anywhere; each brand or retailer writes its own list of excluded ingredients, and those lists differ from one another and are often shaped by consumer preference rather than assessed risk. It tells you what a company has chosen to leave out, not that what remains is safer.

Are essential oils safe to use on the face?

Most people use them without trouble, but they are among the more common causes of allergic contact dermatitis from cosmetics, and concentration matters a great deal. If your skin is reactive, eczema-prone or recovering from a barrier problem, they are a sensible thing to minimise. Undiluted essential oils are not intended for direct application to skin.

Does "chemical-free" mean anything?

Not literally — water is a chemical, and so is every ingredient in every product ever made. It is used loosely to mean "nothing synthetic", which returns to the same problem: where a molecule came from does not predict how it behaves on skin.

How do I work out which ingredient I reacted to?

Stop the suspect products, let the skin settle, then reintroduce them one at a time with a week or so between. Compare the ingredient lists for what the reactions had in common — fragrance and essential oils are frequent overlaps. For repeated or severe reactions, a dermatologist can carry out patch testing, which is much more reliable than working it out at home.
