How each one works

Ceramides are lipids that sit between the cells of the stratum corneum, alongside cholesterol and free fatty acids. Together they form the mortar in the brick-and-mortar picture of the barrier. Applying them tops up that mixture, so the effect is structural and gradual.

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant: it binds water and holds it in the upper layers, so fine surface lines look softer within minutes. It adds no lipids and does not close the gaps in a damaged barrier, so the water it attracts leaves again unless something seals it in.

Which to reach for first

If your skin stings when you apply almost anything, flakes, or has been over-exfoliated, ceramides are the more useful starting point — as they are for eczema-prone skin and for dry, heated indoor air. Barrier problems that are severe or persistent warrant a clinician rather than another moisturiser.

If the barrier is intact and the complaint is dullness or make-up sitting badly, hyaluronic acid is faster and lighter, particularly on oily skin that finds ceramide creams heavy. For most people it is not really a choice: the ceramide moisturiser is the base, the serum an optional layer under it.

Using them together

The order is thinnest to thickest — hyaluronic acid on slightly damp skin, then the ceramide cream over it. The cream is what stops the water the serum attracted from evaporating. On bone-dry skin in dry air it can leave skin feeling tighter than before.

Neither conflicts with retinoids, vitamin C or exfoliating acids; both are commonly used to make those better tolerated. One moisturiser containing both is a reasonable substitute for two steps. Give a ceramide product two to four weeks before judging it, whereas hydration you can judge the same day.
