Where the 28-day figure comes from
The familiar number — that skin renews itself every 28 days — is an average measured in healthy young adults, not a timetable the skin keeps. A keratinocyte formed in the basal layer takes around two weeks to cross the living epidermis, then roughly two more to move up through the stratum corneum before it detaches. The two halves give something close to a month.
It is less universal than its popularity suggests. It fits skin in its twenties and thirties reasonably well; in older adults the same journey is commonly cited as roughly 40 to 56 days, and in infants it can be closer to a fortnight. Measured values also differ by method, so treat any single figure as an approximation.
What speeds it up and what slows it down
The rate is set at two ends: how quickly basal cells divide, and how readily mature cells release at the surface. Age affects both — division slows, the basal layer thins, and the enzyme-driven shedding step loses efficiency. Cumulative ultraviolet exposure lengthens the cycle further. Low humidity and cold air slow shedding without touching division, so cells accumulate even while production continues.
Other things shorten it: a wound triggers a burst of proliferation until the surface closes. Inflammatory conditions push the cycle to extremes: in psoriasis transit time can fall to days, which is why the plaques scale so heavily — diagnosis there belongs with a clinician. Retinoids and hydroxy acids shift the pace far more gently, over weeks rather than days.
Why a slower rate shows on the surface
A longer cycle means each corneocyte spends more time at the top. Cells that linger flatten unevenly and sit at slightly different angles, scattering light rather than reflecting it cleanly — the effect usually read as dullness. Retention also roughens texture and keeps marks from spots visible for longer.
Recovery stretches too, since repairing small disruptions depends on new cells arriving and maturing in place. None of this is a fault to be corrected at any cost — a cycle lengthening with age is ordinary physiology. The consequence is mostly one of timing: changes of every kind take longer to show.

No. Thin facial skin and the eyelids renew relatively quickly, while thick skin on the palms and soles takes considerably longer. Hair and nails run on separate timetables altogether.
Is turnover the same thing as exfoliation?
They are related but not identical. Turnover is the whole process of production, maturation and loss; exfoliation refers only to removing cells already at the surface. Removing them does not change the rate at which new ones are made below.
