What is actually being measured
Thickness means different things depending on method. Histology measures fixed tissue that has shrunk in processing; high-frequency ultrasound measures living skin and usually returns larger numbers. Figures for the same site can differ substantially between studies, which is why ranges are more honest than single values.
It also matters which layers are counted. The epidermis is a fraction of a millimetre almost everywhere — broadly 0.05 to 0.1 mm at ordinary sites, several times that on palms and soles — so nearly all the variation in total thickness comes from the dermis. Subcutaneous fat is usually excluded.
Density is not the same as thickness
Density describes how much material is packed into that depth: the quantity, calibre and organisation of collagen bundles, the elastic fibre network, and the glycosaminoglycans holding water between them. Two areas can measure the same in millimetres and behave differently if one has dense, well-ordered collagen and the other does not.
On ultrasound this shows as echogenicity. Sun-exposed and ageing skin commonly develops a subepidermal low-echogenic band — disorganised, water-rich material where ordered collagen used to be — so skin can appear no thinner while being measurably less dense. That is closer to what people mean by crepey than thickness alone.
What changes it
Age is gradual: dermal collagen generally declines from early adulthood onward, and the junction between epidermis and dermis flattens, loosening the grip between the layers. Men's skin tends to be thicker than women's at the same site and age; in women, dermal collagen falls relatively quickly around menopause before settling to a slower rate.
Sun exposure acts on density more than depth. Cumulative ultraviolet exposure degrades and disorganises dermal collagen and elastin, so habitually exposed sites such as the forearm show the change decades before covered skin does. Prolonged potent topical corticosteroids can thin the dermis where applied, and smoking and some inherited connective-tissue conditions reduce dermal integrity too.

Is thinner skin more sensitive?
Thinner skin can be more prone to visible irritation, redness, and fragility because there is less tissue buffering the surface, but thickness alone does not determine sensitivity. Barrier health and individual reactivity also play major roles.
Can you increase skin density?
Topical ingredients that support collagen, such as retinoids and vitamin C, along with diligent sun protection, may help maintain or modestly improve dermal density over time. These changes are gradual and vary between individuals.
How thick is skin overall?
Counting epidermis and dermis together, most skin falls between about 0.5 and 4 mm, with the eyelid at the thin end and the back and soles at the thick end. Single average figures usually come from forearm measurements.
Does skin get thinner with age?
Generally yes, but slowly and unevenly. The dermis loses collagen from early adulthood onward while the epidermis changes little, and the visible signs — prominent veins, easy bruising, crepey texture — owe as much to lost density as to lost millimetres.
Is thick skin the same as oily skin?
No, though the two are often confused. In anatomy, thick skin means the palms and soles, with a much deeper epidermis and no hair follicles. Facial skin that looks thick usually reflects large sebaceous glands rather than a deeper dermis.
Can skin thickness be measured at home?
Not reliably. A pinch test mostly reports subcutaneous fat and elasticity, and appearance gives only a rough impression; quoted figures come from ultrasound or histology. Skin that has become noticeably fragile or slow to heal is worth raising with a doctor.
