Why the thirty-minute rule persists

The advice rests on a real observation. A low-pH product briefly lowers the pH of the skin surface, and skin takes time to buffer back towards its usual range of roughly 4.5 to 5.5 — commonly somewhere between ten and thirty minutes. What has never been shown is that applying the next product inside that window makes it fail. The wait is an inference drawn from a surface measurement rather than from any trial comparing results with and without it.

Formulation has also moved on. Most finished products are buffered to sit in a stable range whatever is applied over them, and the actives that genuinely need a narrow pH are the exception rather than the rule. If a routine feels comfortable and the layers absorb without rolling, timing is very unlikely to be what limits the result.

The waits that are worth taking

Two pauses have a defensible reason behind them. The first is sunscreen, which performs as tested once the film has set, so the usual fifteen to twenty minutes before sun exposure is worth keeping. The second is about tolerance rather than chemistry: if an acid or a retinoid stings, letting skin settle for ten or fifteen minutes before adding anything else — or applying a moisturiser first — generally reduces that sting. Neither is a case of one ingredient cancelling another out.

Everything else is texture. A layer that is still wet rolls under the next one, which is what most people are really trying to solve when they ask about waiting. Give each step long enough to stop feeling tacky, usually well under a minute, and press thin layers in rather than rubbing them. If your skin's tolerance is the limiting factor, spacing actives across different days tends to help far more than spacing them across minutes.
