Antioxidant Network

Antioxidant Network — the interconnected system in which multiple antioxidants work together to neutralize free radicals and regenerate one another after they have been used up. In skincare, pairing complementary antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E can enhance stability and overall protective performance beyond what either offers alone.

Key points

  • Antioxidants can recycle each other, so vitamin E oxidized while quenching free radicals may be restored by vitamin C.
  • Combining antioxidants often produces a synergistic effect greater than the sum of the individual ingredients.
  • Common network partners in formulations include vitamins C and E, ferulic acid, and glutathione.
  • Antioxidants complement sunscreen by helping neutralize free radicals generated by UV and environmental exposure, but do not replace SPF.

Frequently asked

Why are antioxidants combined in skincare products?

Different antioxidants target different free radicals and can regenerate one another, so blending them improves stability and overall protective effect.

Can antioxidants replace sunscreen?

No, antioxidants help neutralize free radicals from UV and pollution but do not block UV rays, so they work best layered under a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
